V I S I O N

“Serenoid” is first and foremost about connecting through one’s differences. Before it’s a love story, it’s a story about found family and overcoming isolation and loneliness.

Both Wyatt and I, as well as many of the wonderful performers you will see on stage, have been inspired by stories and the rich worlds of imagination behind them to overcome whatever stands in our way. We’ve found each other in the creative online spaces of niche culture and bonded with likeminded people, formed connections and realized that we were part of a hive mind, back when “people like us” weren’t visible in the media and on stage and when we had to make up our own stories reinterpreting the characters we love. For many of us, these spaces have been essential for finding identity and representation. “Serenoid” is a story born out of one of those spaces.

The euphoria most members or the queer and/or disabled community experience when we now see characters like ourselves represented on screen or stage is hard to explain to someone who’s not had this experience. As artists, what we want more than anything is to give that feeling back into the world and the way we do that for each other is telling stories that come out of our communities. Putting the characters we understand and relate to on an opera stage for a public audience and having the opportunity to give these voices a space is a dream that we’ve had for a long time, and we hope to inspire more of those stories in classical music and more of those people in the audience and to do our part in amplifying queer and disabled voices in opera.

The world is a rich and diverse place with space for all of us to learn from each other and we aim to reflect in the stories we put on stage. Every support we can get means the world to us – and we look forward to seeing you in September for the premiere!
