Taryn Surratt is a lyric mezzo-soprano born and raised in Houston, Texas. She received her Masters from the Royal College of Music studying under Dinah Harris and her Bachelors in Music Education from Stephen F. Austin State University. She is an alumni of Festival Napa Valley’s Manetti Shrem Young Artist Program, Houston Grand Opera’s Young Artist Vocal Academy, and Houston Grand Opera’s High School Voice Studio.
In the past, Taryn has portrayed the 2nd Woman and 2nd Witch in All Aboard Opera’s production of Dido and Aeneas (reimagined as Dido), Galina in Flights by Tymon Zgorzelski with RCM’s Odessey project in conjunction with Tête à Tête, the 3rd boy in RCM’s production of Die Zauberflote, Agnese in London Bel Canto’s Beatrice di Tenda, Hänsel in Manhattan Opera Studio’s production of Hänsel und Gretel, and The Dog in Miami Music Festival’s The Cunning Little Vixen.
Taryn has a special interest in contemporary opera, both as a singer and librettist. She has premiered works by Robin Fiedler, Tymon Zgorzelski, Jon Nelson, Travis Wattigney, and Kevin Rosacia. Her poems have been made into song cycles and individual art songs, and she is currently working on a children’s opera libretto.
Taryn is an RCM Award Holder, Presser Award Scholar, Cole Scholarship recipient, and SFA Regents scholarship recipient.
