Edie Bailey (they/them) is a queer and non-binary director, composer and librettist from London. While studying Music at King’s College London they directed their first opera, Mozart’s Die Zauberflӧte. Since then, they have assisted on many opera productions including le Nozze di Figaro (Saluzzo Opera Academy, dir. Nina Brazier), Le Portrait de Manon, Fete Galante, and i due Timidi (Greenwood Theatre, dir. Rodula Gaitanou) and Dead Man Walking (Greenwood Theatre, dir. Martin Lloyd-Evans.) In January 2024, they directed Girl, Woman, ___, a Song cycle written by Mary Offer and Kennedy Miller.
They have also begun working in theatre as a music director, composer, and sound designer. Recent credits include Margaret Cavendish’s The Convent of Pleasure performed at King’s College Chapel and Shona Graham’s Chicken Cottage at the Omnibus Theatre’s Engine Room. Their opera, As The Crow Flies, written in collaboration with Ben Hoppe, was performed at the Royal Academy of Music in March 2024.They are currently taking part in Joel Bell and Bushra El-Turk’s programme The Alternative Conservatoire where they will premiere their first operatic composition, Waterlogged.
They are currently assisting Cecilia Stinton at Opera Holland Park and they will be assisting Becca Marriott at Grimeborn this summer. They will also be directing Lewis Coenen-Rowe’s opera STUMPED at the Scottish Storytelling Centre in August and taking part in the LOD muziektheater’s Bijlocke residency in September.
